  53. Thank you for purchasing a Shiva EtherPort card from Eagle Technology.
  54. This file explains critical information about the EtherPort 4.2
  55. drivers. The installer on this disk will install the correct driver on
  56. Macintosh computers that use the EtherPort boards including the Mac SE,
  57. SE/30, Mac II family, IIsi and Mac LC.
  58.  
  59. Shiva is responsible for the engineering and development of the
  60. EtherPort boards; however, they are being manufactured and sold by
  61. Eagle Technology, a division of Anthem Electronics of San Jose,
  62. California in a unique partnership arrangement. Eagle Technology now
  63. handles all support of the EtherPort boards. Customers should contact
  64. Eagle support at (800) 733-2453.

  69. Because Shiva makes use of the Apple Installer 3.2, if any anti-virus
  70. software is running, such as Disinfectant, Virex or SAM, it is
  71. essential to disable it before installing the EtherPort driver. FAILURE
  72. TO DISABLE ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE MAY RESULT IN CORRUPTING THE SYSTEM
  73. FILE. To avoid corrupting the system file, scan the disk with the
  74. anti-virus software and then disable the software according to
  75. manufacturer's instructions. Once the software has been disabled,
  76. please proceed with the EtherPort driver installation as described in
  77. the Users Guide.

  83. (self-extracting archive), EtherPort Installer. SIT (Stuff It) or
  84. EtherPort Installer.PKG (AppleLink Package Format) file, please follow
  85. these Installation instructions:

  87. Initialize a floppy disk and name it: EtherPort Installer.

  89. Drag the contents of the ``EtherPort Installer'' folder to the
  90. ``EtherPort Installer'' disk. Please note that it is not necessary to
  91. place Macintosh system software on the ``EtherPort Installer'' disk.

  93. Go to the next section to begin installing the Shiva software.

  97. INSTALLATION INFORMATION
  98.  
  99. This software uses the Apple Installer version 3.2. Unlike previous
  100. versions of the Installer, Installer version 3.2 allows you to install
  101. onto your current startup disk. Installer version 3.2 will function on
  102. an open, active hard drive.
  103.  
  104. Before installing the EtherPort drivers, quit out of all applications.
  105.  
  106. The Macintosh IIfx must have AppleTalk 56 installed on the system,
  107. whether the user is running System 6 or System 7. Without AppleTalk 56,
  108. the IIfx will crash when swapping from Built-in to EtherTalk in the
  109. Network function of the Control Panel. Once the system is rebooted, the
  110. change will be in effect and everything should work properly.

  112. A version of the EtherPort driver with AppleTalk 56 is available by
  113. calling the Shiva Bulletin board at (617) 621-0190. The installer has
  114. been modified to update both the AppleTalk and EtherTalk drivers;
  115. however, the actual EtherPort driver code has not changed.

  118. COMPATIBILITY INFORMATION
  119.  
  120. The EtherPort II drivers on this disk are for use with the half length
  121. Novell/Shiva EtherPort II card based on the National chip set. The
  122. EtherPort II drivers on this disk are not compatible with the EtherPort
  123. II cards based on the Intel controller chip.
  124.  
  125. To determine if the EtherPort II version 4.1 drivers are compatible
  126. with your EtherPort II card, please use the following guidelines:
  127.  
  128. If version 3.25 of the EtherPort II file is in the System Folder on the
  129. Macintosh, the EtherPort II(n) card is installed. Use the ``EtherPort
  130. Installer'' on this disk to update the drivers for the EtherPort II(n)
  131. card.

  133. If an EtherPort driver is not currently installed on the Macintosh, the
  134. EtherPort II(n) card can be easily recognized by examining it. The
  135. EtherPort II(n) card is a 7-inch long green circuit board that has
  136. either Novell or Shiva stamped on the board. Use the ``EP II,SE/30,SE
  137. Installer'' on this disk to update the drivers for the EtherPort II(n)
  138. card.

  140. If version 2.50 of the EtherPort II file is in the System Folder on the
  141. Macintosh, the EtherPort II(i) board is installed. Do not use this disk
  142. to update the drivers for the EtherPort(i) card. See ``Upgrade
  143. Information for EtherPort IIi Boards'' in this document for information
  144. on options for updating the EtherPort II(i) board.

  146. If an EtherPort driver is not currently installed on the Macintosh, the

  154. Shiva FastPath users should be aware that FastPath Manager 5.3 is
  155. available from Shiva Technical Support Bulletin Board ((617) 621-0190),
  156. America Online (Industry Connection Folder) and AppleLink (Shiva Third
  157. Parties Folder). This version of the FastPath Manager is fully
  158. supported in conjuction with the most current EtherTalk drivers. There
  159. may be some problems when older versions of the FastPath Manager is in
  160. use.

  162. Shiva is aware there may be some difficulties with EtherTalk 2.2.2 and
  163. AppleTalk 56 and some 3rd party monitors such as the Radius gray scale
  164. and the new RasterOps monitor. The technical support staffs at both
  165. Shiva and Eagle will do the best they can to help solve any problems
  166. that may crop up.

  169. UPGRADE INFORMATION FOR ETHERPORT IIi BOARDS
  170.  
  171. If the older, full length EtherPort IIi card is installed, please use
  172. the separate EPIIi package to install the driver available on the Shiva
  173. bulletin board. The EPIIi driver is a System 7 compatible driver that
  174. will allow the NuBus Mac to run under System 7; however, virtual memory
  175. and 32 bit cleanliness are NOT supported with this driver.

  177. Two options exist for users of the EtherPort IIi Intel Board. The first
  178. option is a software upgrade. The software for the EtherPort IIi Board
  179. is available for free from the Shiva bulletin board: (617) 621-0190.
  180. The second option is a hardware upgrade from IIi to II(n), the NuBus
  181. Ethernet card with a National chip set.
  182.  
  183. To upgrade the hardware, call Eagle Technical Support at (800) 733-2453
  184. for a Return Authorization number. The charge for an upgrade is $150.
  185. Eagle will send an EtherPort IIn card as replacement for the EtherPort
  186. IIi card. This applies to all EtherPort IIi cards, even those previous
  187. to revision 2323. Please note: Boards returned to Eagle without a
  188. Return Authorization number can not be accepted.

  244. This software is a PATCH VERSION ONLY. THERE MAY BE SOME PROBLEMS which
  245. we have not uncovered yet.

  247. If installation is taking place on a Macintosh running System 7, System
  248. 7 must have been installed cleanly to the hard drive. System 7 can not
  249. have been installed on top of an older operating system.
